Restructuring Education through Technology
- Interesting point of view how technology has changed our lives since the beginning of times.
- "Schooling is a narrow conception of education" - I think this is so true.
For education to occur there must be
1) a teacher who guides
- does not have to be direct instruction
- in my opinion, does not even have to be a human being
2) a student who intends to learn
- a student's mere presence in a classroom is no guarantee that education is occurring
- this is what I struggle with every day - students who do not intend to learn. I feel like my hands are tied.
3) content to be learned
- stuff of human thoughts, ideas, aspirations, feelings, and attitudes.
4) context or setting in which the guidance and learning occur
- broader than just schools
5) supporting environment
- safe and nurturing where students' needs come first
- if you have to fight for survival, education becomes secondary

Restructuring has to happen through system change. The relationships between teacher, students, content, and context must change. I personally think that teacher-student relationship is changing, at least in my classroom. For example, I use computer-based tutorials to differentiate instruction. I feel a bigger challenge for me is to change the student-content relationship. How to involve students so learning becomes more meaningful and engaging?
I think you're exactly right when you say that students have to intend to learn something. Otherwise there's very little change that anything will sink in. Even if the teacher is excellent and the content is clear, if students aren't motivated to learn, they won't.
